| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review A smart combination of natural wood and laminate, this Grand Epicure cutting board is a great tool for heavy-duty chopping and prep tasks in the kitchen. The design matches a durable laminate base with a real maple surface, so the board is lightweight and dishwasher-safe yet optimal for preserving the sharpness of fine knives. It's also resistant to heat, stains, splintering, and warping, a promise backed up by a 10-year guarantee from Grand Epicure. Measuring 11-1/2 by 1/4 by 18 inches, the board stores easily in a cupboard or hangs by its built-in handle. Coordinating smaller sizes are also available. --Emily Bedard

Not a substitute for the CI recommended Snow River board March 25, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I thought Cook's Illustrated readers considering this product would be interested in this info from the CI online forum, posted by a CI admin:
"Shortly after we applauded the durability and convenience of the Snow River Utility cutting board ($16.99) in our recent testing, we learned that it has been discontinued. In its place, the company is now producing another dishwasher-safe board, the Snow River Grande Epicure ($19.95), which, like its predecessor, boasts a composite core sandwiched between sheets of real maple, but instead of being 7/16 of an inch thick, the new board is just 3/16 of an inch.
"We subjected the Grande Epicure to the same battery of tests as the other boards: We sliced onions, whacked chicken thighs through the bone with a cleaver, cut on it 750 times with a new knife, minced deep-staining chipotle chiles, ran it through the dishwasher, and dropped it on the floor--and then evaluated its resilience. Or, as it turned out, its lack thereof. Fresh out of the box, the board was noticeably uneven, and it had warped dramatically by the end of testing. Cutting on it felt hard and unpleasant under the knife, and our testing left raggedy fissures and deep scars on the maple surface. We can't recommend this board as a replacement for the Snow River Utility board. For a cheaper, dishwasher-safe alternative to our winning board, we'll stick with the plastic Architec Gripper Nonslip."

Seems like a good board (haven't used it yet, waiting for completion of our kitchen remodel before I drag it out) but you should know the surface is WOOD laminate. I was under the impression that it was laminate in the sense of the counter top kind but made to LOOK like wood (thought it would be a great surface to keep clean but still look nice) but it is actually wood with all the attendant needs for care (oiling, staining, etc). I wouldn't have chosen it had I known it was wood. That being said it is much lighter than most wood cutting boards which I find appealing.
This is not the cutting board recommended by America's Test Kitchen March 1, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Unfortunately the Snow River cutting board recommended by America's Test Kitchen has been discontinued. This "Grand Epicure" board is its replacement. I am disappointed with it after just 1 week of use. The board warped after a couple of cycles in the dishwasher. Now it doesn't sit flat on the counter top and swivels and rocks around during use. I've resorted to putting a damp cloth underneath it to stabilize it. It is very light weight and only " thick. I'd prefer a more hefty cutting board. I also don't like the cut out handle. It's unnecessary on a light weight board like this and reduces the amount of useable cutting area. Finely chopped materials just fall through it onto the counter. Who needs a handle to pick up a light weight board anyway? I don't know why Snow River messed with the 03603 design that ATK tested. It was " thick and lacked the cut out handle. Snow River - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

As good a cutting surface as my old, thick, heavy cutting board, but super light, easy to handle, and so easy to clean. I love it!
