5 out of 5 stars A hybrid pan/skillet   January 9, 2007
7 out of 7 found this review helpful

We originally were clued in to this pan by an online review. Otherwise, I don't think we would have given it a second look. Why? This pan is sort of odd: a hybrid between a small saucepan and skillet. Most hybrids aren't useful, not serving either function well. However, despite some early skepticism from my wife (for whom it was a present), we've come to appreciate this pan.

While dark, it is still wide enough to see your ingredients. It is deep enough to serve as a sauce pan, but wide enough to do a bit of a saute. If you need reduction, the pan is a good one, but if not, then look to a more typical, deeper saucepan.

In short, this pan has quickly become one of our everyday pans, inching some other saucepans costing much more.

4 out of 5 stars Calphalon is good, but could be better   December 28, 2006

The pros: Calphalon is a great material for cooking, it has a very uniform heat distribution and is very solid. On this piece, the shallow design is perfect for simmering up your favorite sauce. The curved lip makes spills a thing of the past.

The cons: Calphalon is not dishwasher safe, so make sure you are ready to hand-wash your new pan. Also, avoid drips down the outside of your cookware at all costs - Calphalon stains like crazy! They DO sell a cleanser, haven't had a chance to clean mine yet - so I hope it works. Finally, this is NOT the standard depth pan, it is SHALLOW, so make sure you know what you are buying.

Final word: This is a fantastic price for this piece of cookware - can you believe this is going for 60% off? Problem is, if you want to complete the set, you had better be willing to shell out some serious dough. If you love to cook, can afford Calphalon, and don't mind the clean-up, this is the pan for you.

I LOVE this pan. Nothing sticks, it cleans up easy. I've paid 3 times the price in the past for a comparable pan. This is a great pan and a great value. Very high quality.

3 out of 5 stars Great pan but stains easily   October 20, 2006

This is THE pan that gets no rest in my kitchen. It is sort of small, but there's only me and my husband and it is the ideal size for us (that's probably why I use it so much). I can make two dinner servings for both of us (meaning 4 in total). I love the glass lid too, although the handle on it is metal and gets pretty hot, careful with it.

There's a con, though. It stained after I prepared an omelet-like thing without using too much oil (it's a non stick so I figured it wouldn't have too much problem) and I could not remove the stains. They don't bother me when cooking, they are smooth and seem to be inside the non-stick coating, but it doesn't look good and I fear it will have to be retired soon if the surface cracks or something, because of that damage...

I wouldn't recommend calphalon non-stick products for that reason. I have Teflon pans (Brand name:Tefal, they are the only ones, teflon I believe is still under patent protection and Dupont are the only guys who can sell it :( ) and have done the same dish with no effect on the pan.

Calphalon products are excellent. The 2 1/2 quart shallow saucepan is just the right size for cooking smaller portions.
