5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly GREAT Set of Knives! One of my best internet purchases ever.   March 12, 2006
UPDATE...
I purchase a set of these knives and posted a comment on March 11th, 2006.

I am still very happy with these knives. We use them every day. The block is still as new. The knives are not rusting (we do not place them in the dishwasher). The wood is not cracking. The rivets are fine and as they were when we received the set. The knives are EXTREMELY sharp (I use the sharpening rod each time I use the knives). Nothing has happened to this knife set as-of-yet.

I rate something for its value and its quality. I still rate these a 5-Star because of the value I received for what I purchased, the initial satisfaction and quality that they had when I received them, and the ongoing quality and value that they continue to reflect. I am sure these could not compare to the same quality as the professional sets that cost in the $hundreds, but for my typical household we are well pleased. We would purchase these again without hesitation.

INITIAL POSTING....
This is the 1st time I have every written a review on a product I purchased off the internet. I always read the reviews and wonder if they are written by typical people like me. Well...here I am, and believe me I'm just a typical person who likes to find a good product at a good price on the internet.

This knife and block set is fantastic!...period! I purchased these about 1 month ago. I caught them on sale for $30 with another 10% off and with free shipping. I read all the reviews on this set and also the reviews on the other sets that Amazon offered (including the Wusthof's and the Henckels'). I never bought any in the past because I never wanted to settle for anything except a nice set of Wusthofs or Henckels (not the cheaper Henckel International either) and I just couldn't justify the price. This Pinzon set would be a very nice deal even at the $110 List Price.

My Wife and I are in our 40's and have purchased alot of different knives over our years of marraige. We have never purchased a block knife set (with the exception of steak knives in a block) until now because I thought I'd have to pay $200-$400 to get a decent set. Our most used knife is a knife we have had for over 20 years. Of all the knives we have purchased through the years, none of them have been as good or was able to hold an edge like the 'old faithful' one. Things have changed! I purchased this knife set about a month ago and have not pulled out 'old faithful' or any other knife from our 'knife drawer' (yes we have that many knives).

The knives are very well made (I think they compare the the Henckels and Wusthofs). The block is also very well made and is finished very nice. The set is placed on our kitchen cabinet and I am very proud to show them to anyone that comes over (and we entertain quite often...cards, church groups, etc.). The knives will sharpen to where they will shave the hair on my arms, and they hold the edge very nice (I love a sharp knife!).

The only thing my wife has said about the set is that the bread knive is thicker than our past bread knives, and that the steak knives have very serrated edges. This is not necessarily negative comments about this set, just different from what she is used to. The knives also are marked with 'China' on the upper portion of the blades (this is not an issue to me because the quality is remarkable).

Bottom line...GREAT SET OF KNIVES. I truly did not expect this to be a great set of knives. I am suggesting them to everyone I know that might me looking for a quality knive set that will replace their 'drawer of knives'. Instead of waiting years like I did because I didn't want to spend $200-$400 for a great set, spend the $30 to $50 on these Pinzons and use the rest to take your loved one out to your favorite restaurant. You NEED this set of knives!!!

Oh...the picture doesn't show the meat cleaver that is included in the set. There is also a slot in the block for the included meat cleaver. The meat cleaver is awesome....you'll want to cook something that needs to be chopped. :)

Beedblu.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Expectations!   March 6, 2006

Quite a set for the money! Plenty of years in the kitchen has taught me that these are the knives that will get used! Great weight, good craftsmanship, very sharp. Really glad I got this set - don't overlook this bargain.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent knife set   March 3, 2006

They shipped quickly, and they are an excelent bargain. The quality of the knives is very good. they are sharp and have very sturdy handles. They all have good balance and the cleaver is nice and heavy, so it will be great for cutting up whole chickens and such.

The wood block is a bit chunky, and takes up as much space on my counter as the toaster, but then I have never seen a small knife block!

4 out of 5 stars Great value for what you get   February 25, 2006

I have always used the cheap, serrated edge sets that work well for awhile but become dull without a way to sharpen them. I looked for weeks through the Amazon catalog for a good set in my price range. I kept coming back to this one. It was the cleaver that finally sold me. Never had a cleaver before but forsee easier times cutting up poultry and ribs.

Right out of the box, I found them to be sharp with a substantial heft and feel. They seem well made and sharpen easily using the steel. I also bought a good kitchen knife sharpener. This is not a good set to throw in the dishwasher but they make me want to take care of them with their great feel and look. The scissors are alright for cutting open plastic bags, etc., but are not for extreme users. I would also agree the steak knives are better suited to chopping limbs off trees but are a bit harsh on actual steak. The serration on the blades are too deep but they will probably wear down with time and abuse. These last two items, to my mind, are the only reason this set loses a star. No doubt, a pro would find them less than ideal but for my everyday kitchen use, this set is a steal.

As an aside, if you are unused to sharp knives, be careful. I've already cut myself twice without realizing it until the blood started to flow.

I did like the feel and weight of the the set but they didn't seem to hold an edge and had to use the sharping steel quite often and the steak knife had more of a sawing effect than slicing
